Breaking basketball records

Written by Sidney Harney

For the first time in the history of women and men’s college basketball, a player has achieved 1,000 rebounds, 1,000 assists and 2,000 career points. This has never been done in the 129 years since college basketball began.

Sabrina Ionescu is a guard for the Oregon Ducks. She is a senior this year and is projected to be the number one pick in this year’s WNBA draft. This girl can seriously rack up the stats. Ionescu has 26 total triple doubles in her collegiate career. This stat line is another record for both men and womens basketball at the college level. The main reason for her name being in headlines recently is her record breaking total of rebounds, assists and points.

On Monday, February 24, Ionescu secured her 1,000 rebound to break the record. After breaking the record, Ionescu dedicated the 1,000 rebound to Kobe Bryant. She said it was special she achieved her 1,000 rebound on 2-24 (24 was Kobe Bryant’s basketball number). She also attended and spoke at Kobe Bryant’s memorial before the game against Stanford. In the same game against Stanford, Ionescu’s triple double of 21 points, 12 assists and 12 rebounds helped Oregon secure the Pac-12 title for this season. Ionescu is not done yet and hopes to lead her team to the NCAA title.

Sabrina Ionescu is an inspiration to all young basketball players. She is proof that anyone can achieve greatness if they try their absolute hardest. After graduation, we will have to wait and see what records Ionescu will break when she enters the WNBA.
