As a child, Selena Gomez loved watching her mom get ready for her performances and dreamed of being just like her. Just two years ago, Gomez was named Billboard’s 2017 Woman of the Year, living up to her dream of being as inspirational to young girls as her mother was to her. The now 27 year old Gomez is an outspoken feminist that inspires many young women through her music. Her new song “Lose You to Love Me” is about her unhealthy past relationship with Justin Bieber.
While accepting her award at the American Music Awards in 2016, Gomez opened up about her time off to focus on her own health. She originally wrote it right after her break up with Bieber but waited to release them until she felt she was back to her normal self. In a recent article by Kenzie Bryant Selena said, “It took me a long time to get through it, but now it’s fine. I’m smiling. I feel great.” Shortly after the song release, model Hailey Bieber, Justin Bieber’s wife, posted a picture on her Instagram story of the song “I’ll Kill You” by Summer Walker. Many fans thought this screenshot was posted in response to Selena’s new song. However, the model took to social media to clarify that it was not about Selena’s song.
Whether it was intentional or not, Gomez is a strong, empowered woman who continues to inspire young girls around the world. In finally putting an end to a very toxic relationship, Gomez has shown other young people that they can survive and even thrive on their own.
