Behind the scenes of Springfield’s small businesses

Springfield is a thriving community with tons to offer; all a person needs to do is branch out and try new places. While many exist, here is a run-down of a few of the hottest small businesses to break the mold from tradition while supporting your local places.

Amethyst Lane Luxuries is an online boutique started by a 2016 Sangamon CEO graduate. What started as a requirement to pass a class evolved into an inspiring business. Allison Hudspeth, the boutique owner, had a main focus on selling organic bath bombs, but has expanded to selling custom one-of-a-kind clothing, jewelry and a variety of bath products. Hudspeth’s passion is creating handmade items that make each customer feel unique. Her future goals for the business are to expand to selling her items in more local retail spots and to one day open her own physical boutique.

Hudspeth is one of the few 2016 CEO students to continue her business after graduating. She wants the current Sangamon CEO students and aspiring youth entrepreneurs to always continue with their goals. Hudspeth advises to always network with other area business owners who support your goals and aspirations, and learn from their experiences.

Amethyst Lane Luxuries is constantly releasing new items. Be the first to see the newest trends by following them on Instagram, @amethystlaneluxuries, and liking their Facebook page. Items, including the very trendy distressed flannels, are selling fast, so make sure to check them out today!

Another booming business in the area, Willow and Birch Salon located at 3063 Hamlin Parkway, has been open for over seven years. However, they are in the process of a big change, moving to a bigger salon in downtown Springfield. This move will allow them to expand all their services, including salon and spa, as well as offering a boutique with clothing, jewelry and accessories. Amethyst Lane Luxuries is currently selling items at the salon.

Owner Jessica Kocurek was a self-employed hairdresser for about three years, but she knew she wanted to work with a team striving toward the same goal. This led her to create Willow and Birch Salon. The salon also has a program, Branch[ED] Out, that offers education for licensed hairdressers in Illinois. The move to the downtown area will allow them to have a classroom space dedicated to this program, along with styling labs and additional educational events.

The goal of Willow and Birch Salon is to offer an amazing experience to all clients. Their core values include education, growth, positivity, family, teamwork and hospitality. This salon aspires to make every guest feel welcome and relaxed, while giving each client a unique experience.

Walk-ins are welcome, but it is recommended to call ahead and schedule an appointment. If you are in need of a fresh haircut or a new style, go in and check them out today! Also, they are the perfect place to get your beautiful updo and stunning makeup done for school dances. Follow them on instagram, @willowbirchsalon, and like them on Facebook!

Small businesses in Springfield are booming! Make sure you check out these places and many more around town. Shopping local is an important part of growing Springfield. Amethyst Lane Luxuries and Willow and Birch Salon are the perfect businesses to start shopping local!
