President Barack Obama’s legacy

      In the midst of Barack Obama’s final days as President of the United States it is important to acknowledge the stand-out moments of his presidency. From lovable Al Green covers to his key role in catching one of the world’s most notorious terrorist Osama Bin Laden, advocating for same-sex marriage and his Obama Care program. His refreshing youthful spirit bought back a lovable public persona similar to John F. Kennedy.

Foreign Policy Economy Civil/Domestic Issues
  • Conducted successful operation to kill Osama Bin Laden, former leader of Al-Qaeda
  • Withdrew troops from Iraq and ended the 10-year war
  • Failed to defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan, one of his campaign promises
  • Withdrew over 50,000 troops from Afghanistan, lowering the amount from 97,000 in 2011 to 12,000 in 2015
  • Joined with NATO to end the reign of the Libyan dictator Colonel Muamar el-Qadiffi and aid Libyan civilians and the rebels
  • Improved America’s image as it steadily declined under the Bush administration, raising its approval rate by 26% according to Pew Global Attitudes Project
  • Ended the 2008 recession, adding $241.9 billion into the economy and stirring a growth up to 3.9 percent
  • Withdrew troops from Iran and reduced U.S. nuclear warhead stockpile by 10%
  • Created 22.309 million jobs since 2008, more than any other president in history
  • Signed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (2010) to re-regulate the financial sector after its practices caused the Great Recession
  • Aided the auto industry (Chrysler, GM) in return for equity stakes and massive restructuring and has added more than 100,000 jobs from that alone
  • Heavily influenced the public opinion on women’s rights and eventually the legalization of gay marriage
  • Created the Affordable Care Act, providing healthcare for over 32 million uninsured Americans
  • Repealed the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” act that prohibited gays and lesbians in joining the military
  • Ended the Bush torture policies that allowed certain interrogation techniques that are considered inhumane under the Geneva Conventions
  • Started billion dollar program to aid students in federal student loans, eliminating banks from providing student loans



  • Declared a “secret war” on terrorism directly after the assassination of Bin Laden in 2011. The declaration was eventually knocked down by NATO.
  • Allowed America to be over 19 trillion dollars in debt, the worse compared to any other country in the world
  • Created, which allowed the public to access a detailed viewing of every contract made by the billion dollar Recovery and Reinvestment Act and due to that there has been little to no uncovery of fraud
  • Since 2010, the annual G.D.P. growth has averaged about 2.1% per year compared to its -8.2% decline in 2008
  • Many new jobs created under the Obama administration are temporary positions or pay low wages
  • Since 2009, the middle class has shrunk from 53% to 44% in 2014
  • Unemployment rate at an all time low of 4.7% compared to previous 10% in October 2009
  • Signed Hate Crimes Prevention Act (2009), which expands existing hate crime protections to include crimes based on a victim’s sexual orientation, gender, or disability, in addition to race, color, religion, or national origin.
  • Signed Claim Restoration Act (2009) and reimbursed black and Native American farmers that America has cheated out of loans and other things in the past
  • Failed to close Guantanamo Bay, yet successfully shrinked the prison population there to 60
  • Signed Lilly Ledbetter Pay Act (2009) giving women who are paid less than men for the same work the right to sue their employers after they find out about the discrimination, even if that discrimination happened years ago
